Ainsley's been studying Australia in her Social Studies class. To end the study, Mrs. Snyder (her Soc. Studies teacher), had an Aussie Day celebration with food and festivites. Mrs. Snyder sent home recipes and the parents brought in their assigned treats. We made Pavlova's (a meringue shell filled with cream and berries). The class was allowed to modify their dress code, wearing red, white and blue (the colors of Australia). Here are 3rd graders enjoying their treats.

Jackson enjoying cake dipped in Chocolate (I need to get this recipe as it was really good!)

Maddie B. with Pavlova made by another mom.

Maddie C. w/Chicken wings (didn't know they were Australian)

If they studied Australia, did the class try Vegemite sandwiches? Vegemite is supposed to be a favorite down under just like peanut butter is here. I smelled some Vegemite that Margaret had, it was nothing like peanut butter!
Your Pavlovas looked yummy. Dad would like to try them.
I am very impressed with the pavlovas you made! It is a dessert that is not easy to master at high altitude (nevada) so I have been known to cheat and use the pavlova "egg" that you can buy in Australia. It has all the ingredients and you just add water and sugar. I have had lots of success and our family loves this dessert. Very impressive if made into a large round pavlova.
Vegemite is a concentrated yeast extract that is enjoyed by most Australians. Most americans do not like it however if you can get a small jar at an International market, give it a try. Would recommend the smallest jar you can get!!!
